The Biobricks web site is a repository for open source bio bricks--that is open standard DNA parts that encode basic biological functions. This bricks can be used to synthesize organisms from scratch.

Check out iGEM (International Genetically Engineering Machine) project. In summer 2007 54 teams of students from around the world spent the summer engineering and building biological machines using standard BioBrick components.
